As prices for classic kits climb, counterfeiters have followed the money. Fakes have improved dramatically, but genuine vintage shirts still carry tell-tale details that reproductions rarely get exactly right. Here is the checklist experienced collectors run through before parting with their cash.

1. Study the badge and sponsor

On genuine shirts, the club crest and sponsor are usually embroidered or heat-pressed with clean, dense stitching or crisp edges. Fakes often show loose threads, slightly wrong colours, blurred logos, or a crest that sits at the wrong size or position. Compare against verified reference photos of that exact season.

2. Check the manufacturer tags

Brand tags evolved over time. A shirt claiming to be from 1994 should carry the tag design and washing-instruction format that brand used in 1994 — not a modern one. Country of manufacture, font, and tag placement are all clues. This is one of the fastest ways to catch a fake.

3. Feel the fabric

Nineties and early-2000s shirts have a specific weight and weave. Many reproductions use thinner, shinier modern polyester that simply feels wrong to anyone who has handled the real thing. Ribbed collars and cuffs should match the period too.

4. Look at the sizing and cut

Vintage shirts were cut differently — often boxier and longer than modern slim fits. A "retro" shirt with a distinctly modern athletic cut is a red flag. Genuine sizing labels also match the era's conventions.

5. Inspect the printing on names and numbers

If a shirt has player printing, the font must match the official one used by that club that season. Counterfeit printing frequently uses the wrong typeface or flocking style.

6. Be realistic about price and source

If a rare, mint-condition classic is priced far below the market, assume there is a reason. The safest route is buying from a specialist that grades condition and stands behind authenticity.
